Garden No 6: The Romantic, Walled Garden

Set in a lightly-wooded suburban location, this wide but fairly shallow garden was a boring empty space: a tatty lawn, surrounded by dull, high conifer hedges. This was replaced by a romantic walled garden containing herbs, roses, iris and lavender and, as the central device, a Victorian statue of a child holding a bird bath. A small water feature with two terracotta pots draws the eye down to ground level and then beyond to a pretty painted summerhouse. This helps to reduce the dominance of the high hedges. A large terrace with pergola provides an excellent dining area, further defined by low brick walls which offer extra, casual seating when large groups are being entertained.
